If you plan on draining your pool at the end of swimming season follow these 3 steps to make sure you don't pollute your neighborhood streams!

  1. Allow the water to sit for 72 hours without adding any chemicals. Sunlight will help dechlorinate your pool water to make it less toxic to aquatic life. Let the sun naturally dechlorinate your pool for free!

  2. Release the water from your pool onto your yard or over a grassy field. The water can soak into the soil or evaporate to keep remaining chemicals from entering streams.

  3. Drain your pool slowly. The slower the better! Letting the water out slowly will minimize erosion, flooding and the overall impact of your pool water on rivers and streams nearby.

Did you know:
Dumping pool water into streets and storm drains is against Athens-Clarke County Ordinance? Doing so may result in fines!

Remember:
Storm drains lead directly to streams and the water does not get treated! Anything that you put down a storm drain will wash into local waterways and impact the animals and plants that rely on clean water to survive!

Welcome to the new section of our stormwater website!  Take a look around the Media Room to download podcasts and videos, and look at the calendar to see what workshops and stormwater events are happening this month.

The interactive watershed map lets you report any flooding and illegal dumping that you've seen.  Just enter your street address, adjust the placement of the icon to be as accurate as possible, and then click on the check mark.  We follow up on every report and if you leave your contact info we'll get back to you as soon as we can.  Data like this will help us to find trends in flooding and illegal dumping so that we can best use our resources to protect our local watershed.

Like any new website, there are sure to be a few bugs at first.  If you run into a problem while using the website, email a description of the problem to us at info@accstormwater.com.  Thank you for checking out the new section of our website!
